The ‘I will be happy when’ syndrome that can destroy your life

Around 6 months ago, I worked with a startup for developing their venture all around India and the founder was very much focused on building the business that he had even forgot about everything else. Spent days on developing the website, client base, legal, etc. All the things that you need for building a startup. It is like a never ending list of groceries, there’s always something more to buy. In the verge of building the business, you often forget to build a life. The only thing that can make the situation better is when the time comes to launch the business. He always used to say ‘I will be happy when I launch this business’ but he forgot that once the business is launched there will always be the next set of achievements or milestones to overcome.

‘Don’t be so busy to make a business, that you forget to make a life’

Similar, another of my client was addicted to busy. At the core, she believes her pursuit of “X” will solve her deepest problems. She had been infected with the deadliest disease of all.

The I will be happy when Syndrome

While this doesnt seem like much, the roots sink deep within your soul. The question you need to ask yourself is that what is the most important for you. Is it to attain wealth, or complete that task, launch the business that will make you happy.

This is a disease of ruthless comparison and where our authenticity, our abilities, our bodies and our story are never enough.

If you can’t be happy where you are, with what you have, you never will.

True happiness is not in attaining something but enjoying the journey that you go through to attain that wealth. Enjoy the path and the result will be fruitful. Enjoy every moment of your life. you don’t need to wait till you finish that last task, or get that job. It’s either now or never. No job, or person, or implant, or promotion, or house will ever heal the disease behind them. Seek healing through counseling, be vulnerable with a friend, and ask the hard questions of why you do this?

In the end its all about asking yourself this one simple question, why are you chasing this? Why do you believe that achieving X will help you gain happiness. We cannot control the future, we can never control the outcome of our actions and emotions, We can only control ourselves and change the external scenario.

Do you struggle with this disease? What are you hoping will make you happier? What has helped? Let me know in the comments below.
